Kongo Ba Téria
Based in
Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso, Kongo Ba Téria
creates its work in one of the continent’s major centers
for contemporary dance. Influenced by working with the renowned
Compagnie Salia Nï Seydou, the experience they brought
with them from the National Ballet of Burkina Faso, and their
work with Irène Tassambedo, Compagnie Kongo Ba Téria
was founded by Souleymane Badolo, Lacina Coulibaly, and Ousseni
Sako in 1993.
With its heady amalgam of theater, dance
and African sounds, the company combines forms and interests
with a dazzling intensity that hovers somewhere between
tradition and modernity. The company challenges traditional
boundaries and creates new movement dialogues.
From 1996-2000, Compagnie Kongo Ba Téria
performed on many African stages in countries such as Senegal,
Ivory Coast, Benin, and Cameroon. Since 2000, the company
has toured throughout Europe- to France, Italy, Denmark,
Spain, Belgium, and Germany.
“VIN
NEM” (THE LIGHT)
Vin
Nem (The Light) is a men’s trio performed
to live music and has been praised as ‘aesthetically
beautiful and ahead in the artistic reflection…original
and unpredictable.” Choreographed by Lacina Coulibaly
and Souleymane Badolo, the work blends African sounds, movement,
ritual gestures and animal symbolism, in a narrative work
that transports the audience, examining a dialogue of bodies
that arch, move in duos and trios and suspend time.
Vin
Nem is perhaps inspired by one goal: existence.
This need to exist is conveyed through the use of flour,
which represents the food of life, and water, which at the
end of the piece bathes and purifies the dancers’
bodies. The work tries to elucidate the truth by taking
the audience into a metaphysical land hovering somewhere
between tradition and modernity.
